Just a few reminders about the Grave site Flag Pick-Up Day on Saturday:
- Please remember that you signed up for a “2-Saturday morning” event – the placement day AND the pickup day. While the Committee does not expect 100% of the placement day volunteers to return the following week, it does expect some from your group to return and help secure the flags for next year.
- In the event of rain, we will need to postpone to Sunday at 1:00 p.m. We cannot put the flags away if they are wet; they will only get ruined. Calverton is famous for having its own weather pattern; it may be raining where you are and just cloudy at Calverton.
Check back on this website for any notice about a postponement.
- Use the same entrance that you used last Saturday and proceed directly to your section and park on the grass shoulders. Ignore the signs on the section monuments; getting as many cars off their narrow roadways will help keep the roads accessible to the Cemetery staff. Also, ignore any construction signs on “Service Lane.” The Maintenance Entrance was, very much, underutilized last Saturday.. If your section was on the EAST side of the Cemetery, “Service Lane” is the entrance you want to use.
- There is still an organized 9:30 a.m. Start time for all volunteers in all sections. Do not start early. We want to give everyone a fair chance to enter the Cemetery and get to their sections.
- 85% of our Units, Groups and families bring volunteers back for the flag pick-up day. Most sections will be completely cleared in 45 minutes.
- DO NOT place the U.S. flags directly on the ground. Bring a tarp or blanket on which you can place the flags. Bundle the flags in groups of 20 and secure them with the available rubber bands. Place these bundles carefully back into the large Flag Boxes.
- Any broken flags should be separated and placed in the provided plastic bag and put into the flag box. The staff will sort them out later.
- HAND IN your Roster Form at the Main Assembly Area (the circular road on your map) to pick up your commemorative Participation Patches. One Roster Form per Group or Unit please. Do not combine groups on one form or it will delay your departure. Additional Roster Forms will be available at the Assembly Area OR I can email one to you if you let me know.
- Patches MUST be picked up after the flag pick-ups are done in your section. Because of escalating postal prices, we will be unable to mail out participation patches at our expense. It’s just easier for everyone to pick up the patches this Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 12 Noon.
The Flag Placement Committee appreciates everyone that is coming out on Saturday to help secure the flags for the 2027 Memorial Day event.
We couldn’t do this event without ALL of you !
